The perfect meal often feels like a vacation – but this is especially true at Ashley’s Gourmet Dining Room at Tara – A Country Inn. The Gone with the Wind-themed restaurant is part of a unique dining experience, where you can enjoy the soft accompaniment of a pianist while you enjoy a delicious seven-course meal.
Upon entering an antebellum Greek Revival mansion through a soaring pillared porch, visitors find themselves in the front room of Tara, staring at Vivien Leigh’s oh-so-petite jacket and the dressing gown that Clark Gable wore in Gone with the Wine. Artifacts from both the movie and the Civil War era are lovingly displayed in the restored 27-room luxury inn in Clark, on the banks of the Shenango River Lake, its lush grounds filled with gazebo nooks, a swan pond, pool, meandering paths and statues.
Tara has a cozy bistro and a gourmet restaurant where waiters in tuxedos and white gloves serve meals on silver platters.
Playing the on the theme of the movie, Gone with the Wind, the rooms of Tara are lavishly decorated.
The Greek Revival mansion, built in 1854, is a luxurious country inn with three restaurants. It is furnished with period furniture, including President James Buchanan’s table (once at the White House), Strauss Austrian crystal chandeliers, and a mural depicting the antebellum South.
For pre-dinner cocktail or after-dinner cordial, the Atlanta Lounge is the perfect place to spend time with the one you love or gather with a group of friends. The intimate setting reflects the Southern charm of Tara – inviting you to come and unwind – leaving the cares of the world far away.
Frankly, my dear, you won’t give a darn…..about the outside world when you treat yourself to a night at Tara – A Country Inn. Step inside and you enter another era, a time when life was slow and elegant. You can just hear Scarlett and Rhett in the next room, speaking in their southern drawls. Women in long gowns great you at the door. Hospitality is not taken lightly at Tara.
Take a walk around the property, inside and out, and you’ll wonder if you are in a museum or a southern country inn. Collectibles abound, both from the Civil War and Gone with the Wind memorabilia. The collection of Civil War guns is one of the largest of its kind outside of Gettysburg. Scarlett’s bed jacket from the honeymoon scene in GWTW, as well as Rhett’s honeymoon robe are on display. Throughout the inn are photos, letters, plates, posters, etc. with a GWTW connection. Any aficionado of the romantic classic would be in heaven.
Gov. Ed Rendell has inducted (the late) James E. Winner Jr. and his wife Donna into the inaugural class of the Keystone Society for Tourism, the highest honor the commonwealth presents to leaders in the tourism industry. The society honors Pennsylvania visionaries in destination leadership and community development.
With acres of stunning property surrounding the impressive estate, a Gone with the Wind-themed package, an indoor and outdoor heated pool, Tara is resolved to give you the complete getaway experience with a delightful touch of fantasy.
Tara has a long-standing reputation of having the best Sunday Brunch in the region. It is perfect for a leisurely family outing or the celebration of special occasions.
Donna Winner loved the movie Gone with the Wind and collected memorabilia from the Civil Ware era and the movie for years. The finds are all on display in the inn, including the bed jacket worn by actress Vivien Leigh in the film’s honeymoon scene.
Tara recalls the romantic notions of the antebellum South. Built in 1854, about the time of its fictional namesake, Tara was the home of Charles Koonce. The décor is Southern plantation and its ambience created by afternoon tea served by a hostess in an antebellum gown – Scarlet O’Hara-style.
Frankly, Scarlett would give a damn. So would Rhett. There’s no question they would fall in love with Tara and the Buhl Mansion, arguably two of the finest inns in the nation.
Both (Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa and Tara – A Country Inn) have rich history, unique décor and impeccable service.
There is a difference between accommodations and destinations. Here are two road trip worth spots that belong in the latter category.
… Buhl Mansion in Sharon PA is a luxury guesthouse that features a complete spa with an abundant menu of treatments, therapies and body care.
… Tara – A Country Inn in Clark, PA combines a lakeside setting with fine food, including seven-course dining in Ashley’s Gourmet Dining Room or the cozy atmosphere of Stonewalls Tavern.
In nearby Western Pennsylvania, two inns dating to the 1800s create an atmosphere that inspires romance. Tara – A Country Inn and nearby sister property, Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa contain stunning collections of art, antiques, historic memorabilia and richly decorated bedrooms. Tara – A Country Inn is steeped in Civil War history and GWTW movie memorabilia. Built in 1854, Tara has white Ionic columns and porches to give the home a southern Georgian plantation look. Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa is a dreamlike turreted castle… listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Thanks for the most beautiful Christmas “Memory” we’ve ever had. Creating memories and our own history is what life is all about….. special “Time” is the greatest GIFT you can give a loved one.
Oh my goodness! Those Christmas lights made me cry! It’s so pretty. The Christmas tree in the parlour is so beautiful. I wish I could come here and stay again! Wow! what a beautiful place!

You really have created a house where we can go back in time. We escape all the stress of normal days if for just one night. We consider it a special treat and feel honored to be able to stay here.
Tara is amazing! The grace and elegance of it all was enchanting. Leaving after only one evening saddens me “but I can’t think of that now. I’ll think about it tomorrow. After all tomorrow is another day”.
At Tara TIME STANDS STILL. It is as if we have transcended time and we walked in the footsteps of our forefathers. Just to think that we have had the opportunity to share in all this nostalgia simply takes our breath away. the pleasure has been all ours!
Such a beautiful place just packed full of era’s gone by. Tara is truly a place for love, beauty and being spoiled.
A lovely setting with a staff whose hospitality is unsurpassed. Thanks for the memories.
As GWTW enthusiasts we were so overwhelmed with the beauty your inn provides. What a wonderful place!
The gentle spirit of this awesome mansion welcomes and embraces you the moment you arrive. We’ve had a romantic glimpse of what the “Old South” truly was. We look forward to our return.
Tara! oh what a beautiful place, like stepping back into a more romantic time.
A step back in time. What a beautiful place at Christmastime!
We have stayed at top hotels from Hawaii to New York and have NEVER had the incredible experience we had here! Dinner in Ashley’s was the most exquisite dining experience of our lives!
What a wonderful step back into time! It’s true what they say about Southern Hospitality too! We’re taking fabulous memories home.
This was such an enchanting evening! it was like being in another world! Something I will never forget.
There are no words to explain Tara. it is breath taking, exquisite and a place you can never forget.
Our visit was a getaway weekend and it was all we expected and more! It was very relaxing, and everyone treated us like royalty. It was a nice way to forget our everyday worries and focus on what’s important in our lives.
Tara came highly recommended and it exceeded our expectations. A short distance from home but a world away.
The decorating is SO lovely I cannot get all your wonderful details in one visit, so we’ll HAVE to return! Your gardens are large, gracious and restful – what more could one ask for? It will be awfully hard to surpass Tara! Thank you for letting us live the fairytale!
What a beautiful experience! Thank you for a step back in time.
Tara is a little bit of heaven with its marvelous collections of treasures and preservation of what is old and meaningful. Much thanks to the Winners for their vision of what to do with their collectables and the preservation of the forgotten word “class”.
The inn (and its hospitality) is enough to inspire one to write a novel about Southern life and comforts – fortunately Margaret Mitchell has already done that!
What a beautiful “fantasy” you have made. Everything we have seen was just beautifully done and was like a visit into the past. Thank you!
I am truly in awe of the charm and tranquility of this place. It is a real treasure. The staff and the service have been perfect.
Obviously this is a setting orchestrated for amoré. How can one not be in love or fall in love again in this environment? Bravo Tara! The accommodations were superb, and the cuisine was stupendous!
The décor is amazing; the antiques fabulous. I am an admirer of “Gone with the Wind” so I was in my glory inspecting all the memorabilia.
I am at peace. We decided to treat ourselves to this luxury and tranquility. It renews the soul. We will return.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful treasures with all of us. I am a huge “GWTW” fan and I feel as though I’ve gone back in time to a peaceful, quiet and happy era. (my daughter is even named Tara).
We have enjoyed the beauty of the establishment. The excellent food and wonderful service. The peace in the air and the romantic setting has been most enjoyable.
Being from the west we really enjoyed the antiques. The meals were great, and the hospitality was fantastic. We hope we will be able to return again.
Thanks for sharing your treasure. Thanks for helping us to remember what it is to relax and savor the good things in life. We threw off the baggage of everyday life and enjoyed the bounty of Tara. It is the attention to the little things that will make this a most memorable stay and make us long for our next returning.
“Girls weekend out”…. one might think that Tara would be an odd place to stay with two other women, but what a great place to share secrets knowing that will never leave these walls. We will make this a place for annual girls’ weekends out.
A time to think back to a time long passed….. so elegant. We look forward to returning again.
Again, our time here was absolutely wonderful. Time stands still here. All of our worries disappear, and all stress is gone.
Once again, we are thrilled to return to the “Old South”. This place just seems to grow more and more beautiful each time we visit. Thank you for offering such beauty and elegance to your guests.
Our first visit to this beautiful “fairytale” land. The staff has been wonderful, and the food is delicious.
Wonderful atmosphere, delightful dinner. Nothing short of excellence.
Thank you for sharing this piece of history your guests. It is wonderful to see buildings from the past restored. We had a wonderful stay!
We feel comfortably connected to the past here, cradled by all the lovely memorabilia, yet in touch with the present. We have been immersed in luxury.
What a beautiful place. We are so glad we found it – it is a real treasure.
Thank you for taking us back in time to a place that is more beautiful and peaceful than today.
Thank you for creating this beautiful historic getaway. It allowed us to step outside the hectic-ness of today’s life and experience a time gone by.
My husband and I are visiting from Charleston, SC – you have done the “Old South” justice. We will definitely return!
On this day we had a wonderful dinner and walk through the grounds. We thank you for this time we had together in your world of love and kindness.
A delightful walk back in time….
We had our beautiful wedding ceremony and reception here and plan to celebrate here each year. With such a wonderful atmosphere it’s very easy to rekindle the romance.
Thank you for what we could imagine is the ultimate in “Southern” hospitality so perfectly recreated here at Tara.
Love is in the air, everywhere we turned this weekend. Thank you for keeping charm alive in this place and in our hearts. We look forward to visiting again.
This is a beautiful and gracious example of American hospitality.
One weekend of luxury felt like at least a week’s worth of relaxation!
We stayed in Rhett’s Room and we will be back. “GWTW” is my favorite fiction book and I LOVED the movie. We enjoy seeing all the treasures. You are so gracious to share them with us. Your staff is so courteous, and we feel like we are truly receiving old-time “Southern Hospitality”! Thank you!
As a young girl I so vividly remember the “magic” I experienced when I first saw “GWTW” at the movies. I have since seen the movie so many times I can almost speak the actors’ lines before they do. This visit to your lovely establishment has rekindled that sense of magic! Thank you for an experience of a lifetime – one I will cherish always!
This was our 10th stay at Tara. We brought our boat and enjoyed the day on the lake before checking in; then swimming, dining and enjoying our room. We enjoyed our stay and expect to return every year on our anniversary.
As we celebrate our anniversary I felt we had gone back in time to “GWTW”. Your detail to everything is marvelous. The service is superb. Everyone was warm and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us.
Tara is like coming home. A transplanted Southern girl, a visit to Tara sooths my soul!
Another holiday memory thanks to all the staff of Tara who helped to make this our best stay ever. Memories will be “timeless” once again. Tara’s elegance has provided us with the total relaxation needed.
You fulfilled all my most wonderful expectations for a bed & breakfast inn. I am a “Southern Transplant”. How nice to be somewhere that fits right in with my original Southern accent (which these Yankees find to be so amusing!). Thanks to all the staff and owners for providing such an elegant and gracious escape from reality. A gal could sure get used to this…. I’m SURE I was Scarlett in another life! We were enchanted by it all.
What better way is there to pamper yourself and treat yourself to an evening of romance than staying at Tara?! It’s the perfect way to reward yourself for all the hard work and devotion you give to your family each and every day! we all need a time to feel like royalty and at Tara, that’s exactly how you are treated. Take a break, sit back, relax and enjoy the moment!
Once again, we are so pleased to get out of the hustle and bustle of Pittsburgh and into the beauty and serenity of your world here at Tara.
On this trip we’ve stayed in 8 Select Registry inns. This by far is the “Best of the Best”.. Awesome! We’ll be back.
